Cookery competition kids to visit White House

More than 50 health-conscious schoolchildren will be visiting the White House next month as guests of Michelle Obama, to celebrate their success in a cookery competition.

The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge was launched in May, asking children aged 8-12 to come up with their own tasty and nutritious meal.

The winners in each state have now been announced and will be joining Mrs Obama in Washington DC on 20 August for a celebratory children’s “State Dinner”.

The recipes were judged at the community-run DC Kitchen by a panel including White House assistant chef Sam Kass.

The vast majority of winning entries were meat-free, and included Quinoa, Black Bean and Corn Salad (Haile Thomas, age 11, from Arizona) and Golden Moroccan Butternut Stew (Alexis Nelson, age 10, from West Virginia).

Last year Mrs Obama launched a Recipes for Healthy Kids competition as part of her Let’s Move! initiative to increase healthiness and curb a rising obesity epidemic among American schoolchildren.

A free downloadable e-book of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge recipes will be published in August, along with pictures of the state dinner. Visit Epicurious.com for more details and a full list of all the winners.
