As well as being another fantastic Meat Free Monday, today is World Meat Free Day – 24 hours when the planet as a whole takes stock of its dietary habits and aspires to a healthier way of eating with people and planet in mind.
“We’re not asking you to give up meat forever, just for one day, to show how easy it can be, so that you eat less meat throughout the year,” say the organisers of the campaign, which launched in 2015. “We want to raise awareness of the benefits of eating less meat for a healthier, balanced diet that’s better for our planet and fairer to our food systems too.”
To do this, the global campaign intends to take things viral, with its #ChangeIt campaign slogan being promoted in a video by Manchester band The Elk; the comedian John Bishop putting out a message to encourage people to get involved; and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver cooking up 18 new meat free recipes on his YouTube channel, including Veg Stir-Fried Rice and Vegan Shepherd’s Pie.
While MFMers already understand the reasons for eating less meat, visitors to the World Meat Free Day website can get facts and figures to help them understand the importance of a shift in how we eat, as well as find delicious recipes to try or, if they’re feeling less adventurous, restaurants to patronise.
So make sure you get involved with changing the planet the delicious way this World Meat Free Day.
