The essay, appositely entitled Meat Free Monday, has been leading an illustrious field following the release of an Ether Books iPhone app at the London International Book Fair in April.
As well as being able to download Paul’s exclusive essay direct to iPhones, the app also offers short stories and poetry from writers including Lionel Shriver, Hanif Kureishi, Alexander McCall Smith and Booker Prize-winner Hilary Mantel.
Paul talked about his essay and the MFM campaign during a radio interview last week. “If you’re on a train and want 15 or 20 minutes’ read of something good, we’re going to supply that,” he told Radio 4’s Today programme. “Also it’s a great outlet for short stories, which many authors don’t have that outlet as available as they used to with some of the great magazines that would take those.”
He expressed surprise on hearing the Meat Free Monday was Ether Books’ most popular essay. “[A friend] said I was racing up the charts. I didn’t know I was number 1.”
