Meat Free Monday One day a week can make a world of difference

Lessons in deliciousness at new Stockholm MFM workshop

Cookery classes are becoming an ever more popular way for people to join Meat Free Monday, with a new workshop in Sweden’s capital city the latest to help meat-reducers learn about the campaign - and delicious food.

Out of the Box Travel ran its first MFM cookery classes last week, led by the Stockholm-based travel agency’s founder, Sanjoo Malhotra.

Fourteen people took part in the workshop, which focused on Indian cuisine, cooking up asparagus soup (pictured left), carrot tagliatelle with veggie patties, onion and aubergine pakoras, and a mango lassi to finish.

Food from countries in Asia, north Africa and the Mediterranean is ideal fare for the growing number of meat-free cooking classes.

Delicious dips, soups, curries and salads from Thailand, India, Vietnam and Lebanon are a much greener option than the Western diet, which is high in meat and dairy, and as a result is wreaking environmental havoc around the world.

Last week Meat Free Monday held a schools workshop in Wembley to educate children about the benefits of eating less meat, as well as to show them how easy it is to cook a MFM menu.

With similar cooking classes springing up around the world, Sweden is particularly active in the battle to create greener food systems: last year Malmö Aviation became the first airline in the world to join Meat Free Monday, and the country’s version of MFM, Köttfri Mandag, is going from strength to strength.

The next Out of the Box Travel MFM workshop will take place on 16 June and from August they will be held once a month at a cost of 795 SEK per class, 1,500 SEK for two classes and 2,100 SEK for three. For more information visit ootbtravel.com.
