To celebrate 30 years, Linda McCartney Foods has launched a Grow Your Own With Linda’s initiative that aims to make growing accessible to young people in inner-city locations up and down the country, inspired by Linda McCartney’s drive to make going vegetarian accessible all those years ago.
Growing your own fruit and vegetables has a raft of benefits: from improving personal well-being and mental health, to getting us closer to nature, aiding a healthier diet and the many environmental positives. Yet despite this, thousands of people across the UK don’t have the space, the expertise or the know-how to start growing their own.
Paul McCartney said: “We’re so pleased to bring this initiative to people across the UK and continue the legacy of kindness that Linda set out with for her veggie food company, 30 years ago. Linda aimed to show that being kind didn’t mean having to compromise on eating delicious food. Through this project, we hope we can empower more people across the UK to try growing, and eating, their own. Dig in & have fun!”
Mary McCartney said: “We’re proud to be continuing Mum’s drive and passion with the Grow Your Own with Linda’s Initiative, aiming to give everyone the opportunity to reap the rewards of growing and cooking with their own fruit and veg.”
Stella McCartney said: “Mum believed that great-tasting veggie meals should be accessible to everyone. This project, launching 30 years on since Mum started her veggie food company, incorporates all her ambitions and values of kindness to the planet, animals and people. The project aims to democratise access to outdoor spaces and inspire more people to get growing and enjoying their own fruit and vegetables.”
With charity partners nationwide, Linda McCartney Foods has transformed six urban spaces into Grow Your Own gardens, creating a place to cultivate fruit and vegetables as well as be a neighbourhood hub for events and activities. In communities from London to Glasgow (and Bristol, Liverpool and Middlesbrough in between!), the gardens aim to democratise growing your own fruit and veg, and show how vital these spaces are for people living in inner-city areas.
