Meat Free Monday One day a week can make a world of difference

Washington DC celebrates Meat-Free Week

The US capital city of Washington is showing the world its meat-free mettle this week with a seven-day adventure in greener vegan eating. DC Meat-Free Week kicked off on Monday with a seitan barbecue attended by more than 40 people – the event was so popular the restaurant sold out of food!

Organiser Amber McDonald established Meat-Free Week in 2010 in response to the city’s far less enlightened Meat Week. Now in its third year, its focus is on producing delicious food and winning over new fans.

For those who are new to the concept, McDonald says Sunday’s “Tweat-up” will be a “great event for people who are veg curious”.

“You can meet people who are veg friendly, but you don’t have to commit to a whole meal. There will be appetisers and whiskeys to try.”

There are meal deals across the city, with restaurants and other food outlets trying to outdo each other in creativity and taste; store discounts on veggie and vegan food; demonstrations from top chefs; tasting menus; and a photo contest to win even more fantastic food!
