Meat Free Monday One day a week can make a world of difference

Belgian festival goes meat-free to woo Morrissey

Morrissey has put the issue of meat-reducing on the musical map by insisting that a festival ban burgers and sausages on the day of his performance. The singer and prominent vegetarian agreed to play Belgium’s Lokerse Feesten, held in Lokeren near Antwerp, on the condition that organisers adopt a Meat Free Thursday.

As a result, music-lovers turning up on 4 August to watch Morrissey – and indeed The Heartbreaks, Gogol Bordello and 2ManyDJs – can expect to enjoy a range of vegetarian foods instead of the standard meat-heavy festival fare.

Lokerse Festen’s organisers were more than willing to make the sacrifice to secure the former Smiths frontman, and have instructed all food stalls on the site to serve “healthy vegetarian dishes”.

“The addition of Morrissey to the line-up meant a welcomed catering challenge for one day,” they said. “As more and more people are introducing veggie days [into] their diet, we considered one meatless day out of 10 Lokerse Feesten days a healthy break for all.”

Lokerse Feesten runs from 29 July to 7 August.
