Also speaking at the event – Global Warming and Food Policy: Less Meat = Less Heat – held in the iconic Hemicycle in the Brussels Parliament, will be Dr Rajendra K. Pachauri, chairman of the nobel-prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and Olivier de Schutter, the UN Special Rapporteur for the right to food.
The speakers will address the link between food production and consumption and climate change, and emphasise the need for action to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable lifestyles. Paul will use his speech to discuss the important role that a reduced-meat diet and initiatives such as the Meat Free Monday campaign can play in cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
The hearing will be opened by assembly president Jerzy Buzek and, according to the parliament’s vice-president, Edward McMillan-Scott MEP, reflects a perception that climate change needs to be addressed at individual, local, regional and national and international levels.
McMillan-Scott, who helped organised and will chair the event, said he was “absolutely delighted” that Paul had agreed to attend. “His presence in parliament is sure to generate a lot of interest and is a feather in the cap for the assembly,”
