In 1994, Jeff Beck, Chrissie Hynde, Elvis Costello and Mike Myers joined Paul McCartney to record a series of messages about the global impact of animal agriculture. Almost 30 years later, with the world’s increasing appetite for animal-based foods being a key cause of the climate emergency, these messages serve as a powerful reminder that all of us can make a positive difference, just by what we choose to put on our plates.
Jeff Beck’s message highlights the damage caused by deforestation to create more land for cattle grazing, as well as some of the harmful knock-on effects from this.
Did you know? An area of rainforest the size of a hundred football pitches is cut down every hour to create room for grazing cattle.
Elvis Costello’s message emphasises how the destruction of the rainforest, in order to rear livestock and produce feed, is resulting in thousands of species of animals going extinct.
Did you know? Agricultural intensification and expansion, and overfishing, are major factors in loss of species and biodiversity – if present trends continue, over the next 100 years or so there will be a global mass extinction of species.
Chrissie Hynde’s message focuses on world resources, highlighting how much of the world’s edible crops such as soya are fed to livestock when fewer animals could be bred for meat and the crops could instead be used to feed people.
Did you know? Currently some 800 million people on the planet suffer from hunger or malnutrition, yet an amount of cereal which could feed three times this number of people is fed to cattle, pigs and chickens.
Mike Myers’ message draws attention to the huge number of trees that are cut down – and vast amount of fresh water that is used – to produce meat.
Did you know? It can take 30 bathtubs of water to produce just one beefburger. To produce a veggie burger made out of soya, the amount of water needed is about 2 bathtubs.
As well as exhausting precious natural resources and contributing to biodiversity loss and species extinction, animal agriculture creates vast amounts of harmful greenhouse gases. In March 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a “final warning” to world leaders and to us all: act immediately to tackle man-made emissions and curb and reverse global heating or we will all face the consequences. One of the best ways we can make a difference is to change the way we eat and shift towards plant-based diets.

“... because we want more and more grazing land for cattle we are ripping up the rainforests ...”
— Jeff Beck
“If you made that little change in your diet you’d be helping people to live, and wouldn’t that leave a better taste in your mouth”
— Chrissie Hynde
“I think the days when we could all eat, drink and to hell with the consequences are long gone”
— Elvis Costello
“The meat on your plate is doing the planet very few favours, if any”
— Mike Myers
I've been getting my family to go meatless at least 3 times a week. It's healthier for everyone and better for the planet.
Vickie
Meat Free Monday has given me the opportunity to educate myself on foods that I would not have usually have eaten before.
George
It keeps me creative in the kitchen, and I am helping reduce my impact.
Rebecca
Previously dinner planning always started with ‘what meat’, and the rest of the meal was built around it. Meat Free Monday helps change that mindset.
Kristina
Meat Free Monday is a great initiative to encourage people to have a healthier diet, save animals and the planet for at least once a week.
